Hey everyone,

I'm new here by it looks like a great group on here. I have a 3 year old make Sulcata and he is awesome and very healthy. My only problem is whenever I take him outside for more thn a little bit h his eyes puff up like he has an infection. We then take him back inside and give him a bath. I know he is very sensitive, but even in clean grass with no chemicals and he seems to have problems. Has anyone else ever dealt with anything like this, could it be the Mississippi humidity? He is getting pretty big even for his age and we can keep him in the house all the time for much longer.

Hi Mikey Triangles, and welcome to the Forum!

Its pretty unusual for a sulcata to be allergic to the outdoors. There's got to be something out there that's getting to him besides the grass. You're sure that nothing has been sprayed on the grass? Pesticides, herbicides, etc?

I agree it seems unusual (although I am sure not impossible) that the tortoise is allergic to the grass. I wonder if perhaps it is dusty in the area you have him roaming in? In the summer here when it gets very dry sometimes the wind can blow loose dirt into my tortoises eyes and cause them some irritation. I live in Louisiana (so equally or more humid than Mississippi) and my tortoises are outside year round thriving in the humid climate, the humidity should not be causing any issue.
