One of my cats hacked up a hair ball on the nice little table my husband made when he was in high school (70 years ago). I didn't see it until it had dried. Is there any way to get the residue off the table without harming the finish, or is it too late for that?

I would get something like Old English - an actual furniture polish/oil and put a good amount over the entire stained area. Let it soak in gently (out of the sunlight) and then gently rub off. The oils should gently soften and loosen the hard bits and enable easy cleaning. You can then rub down the entire top. Careful don’t scrub the soiled spot.

Yeah I would just use a wood cleaner, even just pledge and let it sit on the stain just for a few minutes and then wipe. It should loosen and remove it.
