thermometers

OK, so I may not be the brightest bulb in the batch, but how do you 'set up' a digital thermometer with a probe? I got the Zoo Med one and do you just hang the probe by the suction cup inside the enclosure somewhere? Or does it need to be down in the dirt? I am stressing out about the temps inside my enclosure!!!
