Alright, I got a digital thermometer/hydrometer early December (t was by National Geographic, cheap little petstore one) to replace the dial... but last night Nank the little poo, nocked it off and now the thing isn't working no matter how much I fight with it, What do you guys use for thermometers? And how do you keep them secure?

Thanks!
Sarah

Well that sucks!

I use this $10 thingie from Home Depot. The back has a little clip to open it into a little triangle stand dohicky to help keep it up. I just set it in there and walk away. They do knock it over quite often but I just pick it back up. You could use some 3M double sticky tape and tape it to the side of your enclosure.

I used that same model when my sulcata was a baby. Later I switched to a model that had a remote sensor so that I could get readings from different places in the enclosure. One like this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001B35APA/?tag=exoticpetnetw-20
Also, I used a temp gun to spot check surface temperatures. It still comes in handy today to check temperatures inside and outside:http://www.lllreptile.com/products/24376-tg1-infrared-temp-gun

I use that same probe one in my outdoor sully night box

Would it be possible to just use a temp gun? say I went and used my dial thermometers as a highly rough reference?

I use this too, and Velcro it to the side of the enclosures.

Personally I would rather have both a temp gun and a digital thermometer. I used the temp gun to set the basking spot temp and to check ground surface temps outside and in the indoor enclosure. Never had the dial thermometers, but most members say they are not reliable at all. If you are concerned about the presence of a sensor or a thermometer in the enclosure you can use a wired sensor like this one:http://www.acurite.com/thermometer-with-wired-probe.html
It has a much smaller sensor. Like Tortdad, my tortoise lives outside in a night box, so I need the wireless sensor to monitor the temps in there.
