Hi all wondered if you can give some advice.

I have had my little Red foot for only 3 weeks..purchased everything from new except the viv which was from a friend but it was thoroughly cleaned (I witnessed this).

I am using a bark like substrate that I was sold by my local reptile specialist and was told it was great for torts. He has a temp regulated viv with humidity of 80%, it's sprayed a few times a day.

His food and water are changed daily (obviously), and he loves a bath so gets one among daily.

I have noticed some white/clear small flies flying about in the viv.. They tend to leave him alone but am worried that they may be dangerous for him, or may multiply.

I don't mind replacing the substrate so soon and will give his viv a deep clean if needed but wondered is it normal to get these flies? Should I be worried? Any tips on getting rid? Thanks x

It's completely normal. Those little flies are dining out on your tort's poop and the substrate. They will not harm your tort. If they get too numerous, you might want to change the top layer of substrate. You will have to get used to them though.

I've never done it, but I was told
Pill bugs/woodlice dine on the flies. Is this true. The fact they keep poop down discouraged me from putting woodlice in.

Using pillbugs/roly polies/woodlice (different names for the same thing) to control the flies is not unusual among tort keepers. It could be worth a try
