I think date palms can be used for shade, but I'm not quite sure...
It would be awesome to have a palm tree! I think it's too cold here, though :(
I'd bet tall grasses would do great in your weather. They get big too, and can provide shade. Have you ever had any?

I have palm trees growing on the lawns, but my tort enclosure is at the side of the house where they have sand/ dirt to burrow in. I doubt whether they would let grass grow long before they chomped it off. I have an unused packet of bird seed I might try planting , the shoots would no doubt be welcome but I don't think they would fancy millet much,

Where I am, right now it's 55f, cloudy, cold winds, and a 60% chance of rain.
You should move :D
Nah. We have two seasons here. Hot and cool. Even in the winter it rarely dips below 50. I'm originally Canadian. Believe me, I love those beautiful summers! Take that any day over ours. But I don't know how you guys do it with your torts!

I'm so impressed with the lengths tortoise owners go to to keep their animals happy & healthy. What with substrates, lamps , humidity controls etc etc etc. In hotter climates which suit the creatures we love , its so much easier. Congrats to all that labour for love .

The olive tree I've planted in their enclosure has a trunk thicker than a broomstick handle. Its over 8ft tall. They are selling very old olive trees here, really huge & they cost over 400KD each. I only hope mine will survive the hot weather.

Don't worry about it, they can survive the heat very well... Except I've been told they don't fruit in hot weather, but I'm not sure about that :)

Thanks , I don't need olives. guess what. We have a farm in Syria nr Damascus. The people that look after it send us the gallons of virgin olive oil . so I still have gallons of the stuff, from the last time they sent us some, that must have been 3 years ago. Obviously we haven't been able to visit for some time.

Got lots of Olive Trees here too. They are fine in our heat! And they flower and fruit. I'm sure yours will be fine.

:( I'll bet hot and cool doesn't come with snow ;)! Hmm, I would LOVE to move someplace a bit warmer eventually, everyone with torts who live in toasty hot climates for most of the year seems to do great!
