For the past 2 weeks my tortoise has been passing urates almost daily. She passes them together with her urine every time. I've been doing research on her diet, and I don't think I'm doing anything wrong food-wise in terms of excess protein or oxalates. Of course, it's winter so I don't really have access to weeds and flowers at the moment, and am buying organic greens from a local market weekly. (I have 2 trays of weeds and wild flowers growing which should be ready in a couple of months.)

Her current diet consists of:

- Lamb's lettuce
- Endive
- Escarole
- Radicchio
- Kale (not daily)
- Smaller amounts of red lettuce & romaine lettuce.

Do any experienced members have an idea why this would be happening? And if it's a problem? She's also well hydrated as I give her daily soaks.

Urates are their urine, they are not separate. It's just that urates have some parts that are more watery and some that are more white and solid. My Russian goes nearly every day, but I don't think it's something to worry about. How much does she poop in comparison?

Oh, my mistake- I feel a bit stupid now! But the frequency of her passing urates has really increased.

She actually won't poop when she's in her enclosure or in her bath. So she can go 2-3 days without pooping at all...the moment I let her roam around on her towel for a few minutes after she's been bathed, she'll poop! So it's hard to say- I guess if I let her do that every day she would poop once every day :) But she'll urinate 2-3 times a day.

What is the consistency of the urates. Are the white urates thick and grainy or soft and runny?

I’m not an expert but three times a day seems perhaps high (don’t panic; I’m seriously no expert). I think I’d post this in the health thread, to be on the safe side. More specialists over there.

Just to be sure.

Thanks very much - I'll do that now.

Hi all-

I posted this in the RT forum, but it was suggested that I post it here as well to get the opinion of some more experienced members:

For the past 2-3 weeks my tortoise has been passing urates daily- sometimes twice a day. She passes them together with a lot of clear urine every time (so the urates are runny, not grainy). I've been doing research on her diet, and I don't think I'm doing anything wrong food-wise in terms of excess protein or oxalates. The only real difference is that she has recently started eating a lot more food than she previously did.

Of course, it's winter so I don't really have access to weeds and flowers at the moment, and am buying organic greens from a local market weekly. Her current diet consists of:

- Lamb's lettuce
- Endive
- Escarole
- Radicchio
- Kale (not daily)
- Smaller amounts of red lettuce, romaine lettuce and arugula.

Do any experienced members have an idea why this would be happening? And if it's a problem? She's also well hydrated as I give her daily soaks.

It might be that you tort is a little constipated and is actually trying to poop. Try giving your tort some cucumber it will hydrate and help loosen the poop. It usually takes about a day to tort with my tort so don’t get discouraged. In the mean time I know there are more experienced members who will know more.

That makes sense actually- I've noticed she's straining a bit when she poops lately and it seems a lot dryer than it used to be. I'll give this a go :)

Just remember Cucumber is a treat food and should be treated like fruit. It is mostly water so its not very healthy if eaten to often and if your tort is like mine it will be addicted to cucumbers lol.
