I use coconut coir for most of my substrate. The humid part of it, I use spagnum moss. It holds moisture better. I have never had any problems with my tort eating either of them.

I like Cypress mulch. It seems to hold the moisture well and he can move around well on it, it's easy to clean and if he wanted I think he could burrow in it. I have heard to stay away from sand, like calci sand and reptile sand.

I live in the sub-tropics and I have hatchlings Indin star. I use Chinchilla hay. The kind with marigold flowers and dandilion. Seems they can nibble and be dry but also humid as we are 80-90 humidity during these months and they live outside. I chnge the hay once a week as it gets a bit damp, I leave the flowes as they like eating them slightly less dry
