Hello.
I’m hoping that can someone help me identify this tortoise. I work at an animal shelter and this little guy was surrendered to us. We are working to get him/her into an appropriate enclosure. It is 4” (10cm) long and weighs 150g (5.3 oz). The person that turned it in said that it is a 12yo Russian, but I’m not sure if that’s correct.
His shell seems quite soft and thin, with the scutes being somewhat concave. He was chewed on y a dog at some point in the past, and is missing part of his foot and has healed shell punctures. So far he is active and eating well. We have him booked for an appointment at at reptile vet, but cant get him in for 10 days.
Once I know the species, I’ll take a look at the relevant care guides and make sure he gets what he needs. Any additional advice or what I should ask the vet is welcome.

Cheers!

This is an eastern Hermann’s
Thank you so much. Is there any way to determine it’s approximate age? He still has a juvenile shell pattern, how long do they hold on to that? He hasn’t had the best care so is probably somewhat stunted.

There isn't really any way to figure out age beyond using the time the previous owner had it as a number to start at, but I agree that it looks oddly young. That could just be a product of stunting from bad care, like you said. I'm not super experienced with this species, though, so take this with a grain of salt.
