Does anyone think it's possible to have a tortoise shed outdoors in a Canadian winter. Keeping it warm etc. Possible ways to make it happen? Just wondering for when he is older.

Are you kidding me, of course it's possible. I am going to have one for my Chicago winters. You just have to insulate really good and heat it. I will be adding a greenhouse to mine to hopefully benefit from some natural sun heat and it's also for extra roaming space. I am also looking in to some solar power heat sources to help out with heating costs.

Ok sounds good. I'm just always worried that the heat may somehow stop working. And he will freeze

Call it a shed if you want, but to do it right it's going to cost you around 10 grand. Don't leave out any details either, like, when you open the door to enter. It's going to have to be into some type of heated hallway or area before you even get to where your tortoise is.

Not sure where your buying your stuff at, but it shouldn't cost no where near 10 grand, unless you can't build it yourself. Yes, it has to be thought out correctly, so heat does not escape when the door is opened, however, that is too easy of a fix. Several ways to do that.

A friend of mine in Iowa hibernates his tortoises outdoors in a shed. he uses a heater to actually keep the inside up to hibernation temperatures within the shed since it's much colder outdoors all winter. He has a back up heater set to just a few degrees cooler than the main heater in case the first heater fails.

The main concern would be a long term power failure unless you plan to have back up generator wired into the system that comes on automatically if there is a power loss.
