I would have thought putting items like a towel or newspaper in a tortoise enclosure would be a no no.

thinking that said tortoise would try to eat these items but I've seen a fair few photos on this forum and other places on the net were a tortoise has a either newspaper layed down or a towel.

is this ok to do? if a tortoise did manage to eat some paper or fibre would it be a problem.

Saying that, I'm sure my hermann tortoise "Bruce" eats (or tries) his wood chippings that I've put in his enclosure...

any thoughts?

:)

In my opinion, newspaper or paper towell is fine if you are setting up a hospital tank, or as an interim substrate until you can get a more permanent substrate.

I agree with Yvonne, I only use newspaper if I have a injured tort that needs a clean dry area to keep wounds clean, otherwise I use aspen or a sand/soil mixture.
