Depends on the Tortoise. I think it just offers you a wonderful opportunity to educate them. Of course, I keep box turtles and not tortoises, but people are silly.

After telling my hillbilly (I can say that!) Grandmother 45 times that Echo is a tortoise, NOT a turtle, I now passive aggressive her when she *southern draw* "How's yer turtle?" I reply sweetly "dry...really dry..." :p
The first offense doesn't bother me, some where between the 4th and 45th I get annoyed! Haha.
But in all seriousness, no, a lot of times people just don't know any better. I love teaching children the difference and watching them educate their parents and friends :)

People can call them whatever they want as long as they leave them alone.

I'd much rather hear someone say "how is your turtle doing?" than "Gopher tortoises? Yea my cousin eats those things"
(yes, I've actually heard that)

Dear God. When I was a kid my folks prepared turtle. Never tortoise. (not that it's any better in my opinion :/)

Its doesn't bother me at all, its just a word. I don't correctly people on this one. It makes no difference, in the big scheme of things, whether someone calls my animals turtles or tortoises. We're all talking about the same creatures. No big deal.

It doesn't really make sense since they are both the same amount of syllables but for some reason I think turtle is just easier to say. And not many people know the difference. It's just a lack of knowing. Which I don't expect people to know in the first place so I tell people I have a turtle. Sometimes to be fun I say I have a land turtle. Haha! People think that's a correct term!

Well since "Water Turtles" require water to swallow their food and "Land Turtles" can eat food without being in water.

So I can see the term "Water turtle" and "Land turtle" being an appropriate term.

It only bothers me when I take the time to explain the difference and then 2 seconds later they use the word turtle again.

I read that both terms are correct. I know that box turtles are land turtles but are not tortoises. I also know that there are water turtles that are mostly in the water but come on the land. As far as I know it is a technicality and while I prefer tortoise for my sulcata, it bothers me when people call my box turtles tortoises. Go figure! My husband always said I was a little bit odd, what a thing to get annoyed about.:)

I really thought about that but she got me first! She just bragged about how much her allowance is and how she bought her own iPhone and how she can pay all the bills all own her own. I would much rather have a tort than any type of phone. She even asked my friend Julia who has snakes (used to have 24 but only kept 2) "turtle or tortoise" and she was like, what? A girl behind us heard our conversation and she asked her "turtle or tortoise" she responded tortoise! She just didn't know how much love some people have for their tortoises.

I don't get mad.
If they were mentioned as a fiood source it would be a knee jerk reaction to get upset. Good grief!

I hate to tell you guys, but...

Turtle is a correct term for tortoises.

All tortoises are turtles no matter how you want to try to define the terms. It is unfortunate that the same term applies to both the large group (shelled reptiles) as well as one of the sub-groups (aquatic shelled reptiles), but that is the way it goes. It would be nice if we could use 'chelonian' when we mean 'turtle or tortoise', but even a lot of people on this site do not use the term routinely.
