I have just gotten 2 common musk turtles only a few months old....

my main question or attempt for advice is i have a friend who owned turtles and she told me she would sometimes take them out and put them into a box she has made into a play area for them , with sand etc and a few other things they could mess about with. From what she told me the turtles seemed to enjoy and look forward to it.

I was just wondering if this is quite a common thing or is it very rare??

Turtles and tortoises don't play.

However, they do enjoy a well set up enclosure with the right amount of space.

I can't tell you what Musk Turtles should have, sorry, as I have no experience with them.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum!

I used to have an aquarium with a couple Red ear sliders in it and also a little female mud turtle. Because the aquarium just had a plastic landing dock, I felt sorry for the turtles and on the weekends I would put them out into the box turtle's enclosure. It was a nice flower bed affair that no one could escape from. The turtles did a lot of wandering around in there and seemed to enjoy it. But I wouldn't say they 'played.' If they should happen to find a bug they wanted to eat, the box turtle's waterer was big and deep enough they could submerge themselves in it.

I'd recommend setting up a thoughtful enclosure instead. Lots of sight barriers, hides, plants, fish. Things to keep their environment interesting. Look up "Bauri Bob Turtle Tank" on YouTube. He has great enclosures for muds and musks w long videos on how he set them up.
