The one area I have been struggling with is the best UVB lighting for the Russian Torts. I currently have the Repti-Glo 5.0 compact bulb but am thinking that this is not good for the tort. there is so much information on the internet about what bulb is good and what is bad. Any clarification on this subject is greatly appreciated. I don't want to find out the hard way that the bulb I am using is hurting him.

Hi Rhonda:

This is the bulb we've been talking about as causing eye damage. Your bulb might be perfectly fine, because they have supposedly been upgraded and fixed, however, I don't trust it.

I think the best UVB bulb for your Russian tortoise would be one of the tube-type bulbs. I've heard that some Russians hide from the Mercury Vapor Bulbs, so that's not a good choice.

I really like the 18 inch Exo Terra 10.0 UVB tube light - the fixture isn't very expensive, and I buy the light bulb on eBay for a little over $20 shipped. Amazon has it, too. I replace it every September, after bringing the torts inside permanently for the cold months. I have 3 tortoise enclosures, and I have had good experience with this bulb in all of them.

This is the one I get: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Exo-Terra-R...199?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item416493f84f

I know there are other ones out there that are equally good, this is just the one I've used for the past 4.5 years (well, a new one each year, obviously).

Thank you very much. I think I am going to switch to the tube type.

Has anyone used the Zilla Slimline Desert 50 UVB fixture and bulb?

I used the Zilla slimline one once for one enclosure, and wasn't super impressed. The fixture is nice, and I used the fixture and bulb for 6 months, then replaced the bulb with the Exo Terra 10.0 desert bulb. There are some mixed reviews on the slimline, they didn't have the ratios quite right, and a lot of animals were getting lethargic. They say that the problem has be resolved, though, so that may be a non-issue.

Thanks. I was thinking of doing that same thing of using the Exo Terra 10.0 bulb in the slimline. I appreciate your suggestions. The UVB lighting has been the hardest part for me with my new tort. I don't want to find out the hard way that I am using the wrong bulb.
