My tortoise was given a vitamin A injection for respiratory infection puffiness of eyes but I’ve now read it’s toxic! Is she gonna be ok? Should I be concerned? Can it be lethal to the animal?
Redfoot 4 years she’s not too small. I won’t let them do it again. No no tests on her she had runny nose, puss build both sides of head that lanced etc. 32 degrees on heat and UVB 12 hours
Before and after the injection ?Do you have pictures before and after?
Uvb only needs to be on 4 hours like 11-3 or 12-4.Redfoot 4 years she’s not too small. I won’t let them do it again. No no tests on her she had runny nose, puss build both sides of head that lanced etc. 32 degrees on heat and UVB 12 hours
She’s eating but obviously struggling to open mouth properlyThank you. I remember this post about the swelling. Hopefully and expert will help you very soon. Is your tortoise eating and acting normal?
Hi yeah thank you I got them lanced sad to see her in pain. Going to get more vitamin A through carrot and pumpkin etcFirst of all, let me say, there's nothing wrong with vitamin A injections when done right. Trouble is, a lot of vets over dose. I don't know if the weight of the tortoise's shell has something to do with it or not, but too much vitamin A in an injection causes the tortoise's skin to slough off. . . and not just at the injection site. I've seen tortoises with skin peeling off their legs and necks too. Not a pretty sight, as it goes down to raw flesh.
BUT!!! It's fairly easy to get vitamin A into a tortoise without injecting it into them. A lot of foods we feed are high in vitamin A, and those foods are attractive to tortoises and easy to feed to them. So an injection isn't necessary.
A note about ear abscesses - the swelling you see on the outside is doubled on the inside. When there's an abscess on each side of the neck, that means that there's not much room inside the throat for food or water to pass through. So it's pretty important to get those abscesses lanced and relieved
