As I mentioned in my picture thread (re: Nor's arrival) I couldn't be happier with my new little girl/guy. However I do have one concern about him/her.

Her eyes have seemed awfully weepy this morning since she woke up. I've noticed her wiping her face on her front legs and can see visible dampness.

She didn't hesitate to chow down a big pile of romaine mixed with greenleaf lettuce and defecated and urinated while doing so (as well as yesterday on the way home). She then made for the hide in her warm spot and hunkered down until I left (I'm guessing, as I'm trying not to pester her too much until she settles in).

I was going to wait for the exotics vet to get back into town before I took her for a checkup but this has me thinking that maybe I should go and see one of the interns just to be safe. I'm worried that stressing her out more, if she's only feeling a bit "off" because of the trip, would only make her worse though.

Advice?

As a brief update: When I checked on her a few moments ago there was a thin, clear mucous coming from her nose and I could hear her "sniffling". We have an appointment with the vet tomorrow at 9:30am.

I am really sorry to hear about your little Nor. Taking an appointment with the vet is a very good idea.
Good luck tomorrow.
Keep us updated please :)

Don't let the vet give your tortoise an injection of Vit. a, d, e. The Vit. A injection can sometimes cause the skin to slough off. For some reason, vets seem to think that the tortoise needs this injection to improve his appetite. Not so. More harmful than beneficial.

Quite often weepy eyes and bubbly nose can be attributed to something wrong with the substrate you are using. What do you have him on?

She was on bark (from Home Depot) at the breeder's house and I put her on aspen chip when I got her home. I'm going to be providing her with a 70/30 soil/eco earth substrate in the cool end of her tank and I've increased her basking spot a little bit in the meantime.

I won't let them give her any injections to improve her appetite. That definitely isn't her problem. :)

Vet says we've got a clean bill of health (pending results from the fecal that Nor so kindly provided us while we were there)!

The runny nose and weepy eyes were most likely because of stress and since they've cleared up already the vet figures that there shouldn't be any further problems. Her shell is healthy, muscle tone is good, defecation and urination are excellent, appetite is great, eyes are bright, and her mouth is clean and healthy.

Exam fee was $50 and fecal was $20. I don't mind spending the money to make sure that the little squirt is good to go. The vet was also VERY impressed with her outgoing personality. She was trucking all over the place and was quite receptive to shells scratches and chin rubs.

Good news, I am really glad Nor is fine :D.

Sounds like that vet is a keeper!! So many times they just assume that the runny nose means respiratory infection and start them on antibiotics, without doing a test of the mucous to see what is really going on. I'm so glad that Nor' came away with a clean bill of health. Nor' sounds like a very well adjusted little tortoise.

Good news, When i got my tortoises one of the 4 got a runny nose and eyes were sticking shut, i just kept him warm didnt put him in the outdoor enclosure like the other 3 just kept him indoors and kept an eye on him, also soaked him a lot, he got over it and now thriving most the time its just the stress that gets to them, Just soak him more so he stays hydrated.
