My guess is turtles because most things came out of the sea on to land.

A tortoise is a turtle ;) but either way each animal was created after its own kind right from the beginning :)

No way to know for sure...and while some folks refer to a tortoise and a turtle as a "turtle"....there are some of us that absolutely grind our teeth at the thought of ever referring to a tortoise as a turtle, and I would never ever think to refer to the turtles here as a couple of Red Ear Slider tortoise????....no thank you

I host California Desert TORTOISE, Redfoot TORTOISE along with Red Ear Slider TURTLES.....absolutely TORTOISE AND TURTLE .....

Turtles and tortoise are the same (chelonia) they watched the crocodile, birds, and dinosaurs, evolve, die, live, change, etc... Sea turtles specifically the leather back date back most prehistoric of all chelonia. The leather backs predecessor was the Archelon which dated 72-84 millions years from present day. Within the 200 or so million years that chelonia dates back, within this time frame turtles/tortoises evolved into many species from predecessor type animals. The geometric tortoise for instance has been identified back far as 110 million years ago, without major change. Colossochelys Atlas was the predecessor of the Aldabra tortoise, dated back 2.5 million to 11,000 years ago.

While a tortoise is a turtle, turtles ARE NOT tortoises.
Fun confusing stuff, huh? :D
