When dogs attack...

Torty unfortunately was hanging out in her outside enclosure when then mutt decided to break it open and get to her.

He chew part of the back shell and some of the plastron off last evening.

I hope the tort makes it through. All my sil did was wipe her off and put her under the heat lamp. I suggested some things I read here; but well...


I haven't checked to see if torty made it through the night, it hurts my heart.

This happens even with the best of care. Unless the shell was compromised and the interior is showing, chances are good the tortoise will be ok. You can clean the scraped areas with peroxide, then dab on some Neosporin. Keep flies off it.

So sad. Bigger fines for people's dogs running loose and things like this wouldn't happen. Well at least not as much. Let us know how it's doing.

Depends on how much damage was done. Fortunately shells are designed to take a beating.

Poor torty :-( she was put back in her enclosures last night against my advice that the coco would get stuck in her. I just cleaned and dried- plus used some diluted peroxide for the back shell. Torty started running around the sink!

I know her care is critical right now- but if they aren't following my advice on husbandry.... Yeah... I'm just super bummed right now.

The one time someone else brings him/her outside the dog wants a snack.

On a good note- this is the first time since it happened there is activity with head/ fast walking. Poor thing just kept burrowing him/herself.

I don't see a lot of damage, limbs are all there, could have been much worse. Don't blame the dog please.

I don't. Just an unfortunate situation. The dog was curious and luckily didn't cause more damage.

Update- still burrowing for most of the day but the tort has come out from under the log. Finally eating today.

Question though- I read about the baby food soaks-
Is this more for the purposes of malnutrition / illness or can I soak the tort in a few days if still lethargic and sparsely eating?

I say a few days because I know the wounds are still semi fresh.
