Why do tortoises walk the perimeter?

Try owning a Russian... Every so often, maybe ones a week mine thinks it is time to try to escape! He will make a great fuss out of it, climbing, scratching and pacing.
So true! Just when you think they have caught a clue they can't get out, you find yet another attempt.

I recently placed his food dish closer to a wall. That day he spend some time trying to stand on it (on two feet against the wall) and climb out, even though there was no way that the food dish would lift him enough to even see over the fence...
