OMG!!! Worst??? I've kept a few different species of tort and I really have to say that Sulcata (while high maintenance and semi destructive) are more outgoing, smarter and more fun then most species. There's not a day that goes by that I don't laugh out loud at Bob, but I can't say the same about my Hermanni and I dearly love her. But she's not funny. Same with ABN, my other tortoise, not much personality. I don't think of Sulcata as 'destructive' so to speak, just too strong for their brain sometimes...:)
I'm sorry I didn't mean to offend anybody, if you name any species though I guess you're going to offend somebody. Nothing personal :) :) maybe this should be a thread about "the worst species for me"

You didn't offend me in the least. We ALL have our own opinions, you expressed yours and I mine, all in fun...
but if you met Bob you'd change your mind...:)

I do like hearing Bob stories. But I just couldn't handle a tortoise that large and possibly distractive. I actually fell in love with a baby sulcata at the pet store one day and that is how I got interested in tortoises. But after researching it I realize there was no way I could provide what that precious little tortoise would need in a few years. And quite frankly I was worried about finding it a new home if I ever needed to. I always have kept my animals until they pass away and that is definitely my plans with my tortoise but we never know what can happen. And with my vision getting worse I wasn't completely sure I can handle keeping the tortoise for ever. I have a Russian and a box turtle now, two types that many people do not like :) but I do and that's all that matters. They work for my situation. But please do keep the Bob stories coming because they crack me up and I'm sure he is quite a character, maybe someday I'll get to meet him.

I'm coming into this thread late, so sorry if someone else has already expressed a similar thought, but something has to be said for individual tortoise personality. I'm so glad that we got three sulcata torts, because I'm amazed at the difference in their personalities. If we had only gotten one, I might not have taken any interest in torts. (Hint, I have my favorite). So, I think to form an opinion of a species, you'd definitely have to have more than one of a kind. Just my two cents. :)
