Hello Tom. I have a quick question about enclosure temps for 18 mo sulcata. Should I be monitoring the air temp or the surface temps? Noticed that air temps have been several degrees cooler than surf temps taken with calibrated IR therm (ex: today, CHE temp controllers were reading low 80s but surface and tort shell temp showed low 90s). I don't want to "slow bake" my tort.

Air temps in a closed chamber is what you want to look at. I don't find surface temps to be as useful. Surface temp of the carapace is interesting to look at to see what a tortoise is doing while basking, but the basking temp should already be verified safe at tortoise shell height.
When Stump is in the box, he comes out to eat only and them goes back. It keeps the food fresh and out of the substrate, any urine, etc. Also, with cypress mulch you can rinse, dry in the sun and reuse.

I'll post in the thread. March 21st of this year. 702grams this evening.

So you think with the humidity and and temp he will grow like yours?
Personalities... I am seriously considering starting a forum where these downers will not be allowed to exist. Again, it's not rocket science. Look at Stump's shell. Right.

I've noticed in the yard they appreciate eating at their level and the resistance of leaves being on the stalk makes it easy for them to eat.

So the mazuri is the most important

By far. It has the most calories and for year one there is to be a bit more protein in the diet according to Mazuri. I called them. They said LS small tortoise for the first year and then regular LS.
Stump eats his 1/2 to 1 body size in greens per day in addition to the Mazuri soaked for 10 minutes in hot water and drained every morning. Eats grass and weeds from the yard now and walks for over 1/4 mile when he goes on an expedition for bird poop and dry worms. s/he should be called a turdoise. Turds are a passion.

I feed Romaine with the Mazuri rotating with grass from my yard
