Hi Tom! Do you mind if I ask question related to sulcata outdoor enclosure? I’ve been planning to build one for my hatchling (2months), but unsure about the temps. I live in Indonesia, during the day temps usually 30-33’c, but I’am afraid it’s too hot. I’m planning to put him outdoor after 3pm when temps is a bit colder, around 24-27’c.

how long should the hatchling be put in the outdoor enclosure, and what time of the day?

I usually let him bask under morning sun for about 30-60mins every morning, and let him roam my parents’ lawn once/twice a week for an hour or so. Thank you for your help!

This needs to be in a thread, not on my profile. Make a thread in the sulcata section or the general tortoise section for these questions. There isn't enough room to answer adequately here.

got it, thanks Tom!
Is it murder when a Vet puts your pet down against your wishes without ever knowing what is even wrong with your pet ??

If you post on the main forums you can go into more detail and will get a lot more responses to this . not everyone reads the profile posts.
Hi! Im a new “mom” to a beautiful babe redfoot tortoise names Toby. Toby is almost 2yrs old now. We are building him a big outdoor enclosure completly surrounded and covered with chicken wire to protect him from birds or other wildlife. We live in south Louisiana so its very hot and humid here in the summer. And i plan on building Toby a insulated hide with some type of heating before he moves outdoors for good.

Hello and welcome! Sounds like a great plan! He will really enjoy lots of shade from the plants and some muddy puddles. If you don't mind, you can make a thread in the Introductions section with some Toby's photos :)

Hi, urgent info required. My tortoise Shelby is not well. He came out of hibernation 2 weeks ago and will not eat.
I’ve bathed him most days and had a heat lamp on him from time to time. He isn’t very responsive and looks unwell. If anyone can help I would appreciate.

Hello! Please, could you make a post on the forum, using "Post thread" button on top right. This is the status updates and not many users see it.
Continue giving him warm soaks and ensure temperatures in the enclosure of 80F with basking lamp always available. Also, you can try carrot soaks: a can of carrot baby food is added to a soaking container. Right after the soak offer him his favourite food. Repeat daily.

Thank you so much! I have not! This is the first time I’ve used a forum, so I’m so glad you told me :)
I bought my redfoot from a petsmart, can you tortoise shell smooth out even after it has pyramid?

Pyramiding will not smooth out but may become less pronounced if your tortoise is not full size and is still growing

Have you posted on the main threads yet? You'll get a lot more responses and will be pointed in the right direction to a RF caresheet which will help future smooth growth.

Hi !
I have two leopards (pardalis babcocki) now 4 inch in size I got them exactly before 9 months when they were may be 3 months old. my question to you is that one is growing very smooth where as the other seems to have a little upper growth especially on the top middle line of scutes. The humidity in their enclosure stays around 60% in the hide and I keep them on coco coir in a tortoise table semi indoors

Ok once again Thankyou and i shall exactly do the same and I soak them around 45 minutes indoors in warm water so same time I can do in the sun with all the care to be taken as mentioned by you right ?

I have seen people using petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on regularly basis on carapace and they say it helps the tortoise to grow smooth offcourse along with high humidity. But I would like to know your opinion on this ?

I've seen it used extensively too. I can say it does no harm.
Hi Tom you seem like the go to guy for questions. I have multiple tortoises all juvenile. But I have a yellow footed hatching. I am using coco coir substrate but he seems annoyed by it. Is there something else I should be using due to his age?

FIne grade orchid bark works best. This is especially important for bot RFs and YFs to prevent shel rot. Use a 3-4 inch layer and the lower layers can be kept damp for humidity, while the upper layer is more dry to prevent shell rot.

Thank you I hope this helps him. He's a picky guy lol.

2 Redfoot tortoises with a hatch date of Aug 28, 2021. I purchased from a reputable AZ breeder just after hatch date. I don’t know gender but I do want to keep them together. They bask, eat, hide & do “tortoise things” together.
No shell, beak or nail problems. Neither have ever been sick that I know of. They are not picky eaters.
Very friendly. They will eat out of our hands & let us give
I have rescued to Russian Tortises and I’m kind of a beginner, any tips are appreciated 😊

Hi Please post in Introductions and you'll get more responses. Please read the Information for new people under FAQs and caresheet for Mediterranean/Temperate species in Species Specific threads If you follow those your torts should thrive but only if you separate them into their own enclosures because torts should never be kept in pairs.

We built the your plan night box. Well Charlie has grown to 78 lbs. When it is time to build a bigger one? At 15 degrees right now in texas and we are having trouble keeping the box at a steady temperature. We hung a small space heater to help with the temps. Is there a better way? Not sure why it is not holding the heat as good and if the fluctuation going from 71-100 is even good every 53 min?
I have a African sicata tortoise i don’t know the sex or how old it is, my cousin who passed left it behind, so IM now taking care of it, everything looks good with it, but i have not seen it once drink any water, i have have given it , cucumbers and hay and some romaine lettuce, along with tutle pellets it doesn’t seem interested in so now it doesn’t get any, i often moist the leafy greens, and it soaks 3x a week,

Hello and welcome! Your post is a "profile status update" and probably will go unseen. Please, can you make a thread in Introductions or Sulcata Tortoises section (use green button "Post thread" on the top right of the main forum page)?

Photos of the tortoise (top, bottom shell, tail area) and its enclosure would help tremendously. Especially with the "white patterns" thing. Also what it is its age, size, weight?
Hi all,
First time member here. I’m not sure how to post here, I hope this is the proper approach for support. I am so glad to have found this forum! I need help with our little foot. Once I have confirmation of this being the way to go, I will share our situation.
Thank you!
I was told you might be able to help me. I posted pictures on the thread... "few days ago she said she wanted us to look at Tortie because she thought she saw another crack. I am up loading a couple pictures of his shell. I don't see a crack like the last time. And as I was doing some reading on this Forum I am hoping for some help. Thanks in advance."
