Starting to post more often as i’ve finally started purchasing some of the things off of my list for the future tort. I’m excited to take my kids foraging with me (we love being outside!), for edible plants for our future shell baby. I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a great plant identification book so we can easily identify what will be safe foods!

Have you seen www.thetortoisetable.org.uk ?
It has lots of pics to ID plants, but easier if you have an idea of names.
It's based on UK plants but there will be many we have in common.
There is an app I've seen mentioned on here which I think you can send photos of plants to and it IDs them, but I've no idea what its called - hopefully one of the US members will know.

Oh, cool! I’ll see if I can find it. Thank you, Lyn!

My all time favorite is Botany in a Day. You learn how to identify what family a given plant is in based on just a few characteristics that are common to plants in that family. By learning the characteristics of just 8 families, you can pretty closely identify 10's of thousands of species! That's where TTT database that @Lyn W mentioned comes in, checking to see if a plant is tortoise safe.

I don't know how old your kids are, but I just got Flora: Inside the Secret World of Plants. It is a coffee table-sized book and has some of the most breathtaking close-ups I've ever seen. It explains in small chunks all about plants, their components, life-cycles, etc. Well worth having for budding young botanists (pun intended!)
