As others have said, your tortoise does indeed look female. Looking at the plasteon oic though, your tortoise is most definitely older than 2-3 years. I see many growth cycles (reflected in the little ridges) and then a time of rapid growth, probably after captivity (reflected in the more waxy looking smooth light growth). I'm guessing your tortoise was likely wild caught... And the pet store claimed it is a youngster. I'd need to see the carapace, but I'd guess it's age at 10-15 years based on the plasteon pic. A 2-3 year old wouldn't have nice thick legs like that yet, either. And the scales are horned and well developed, which doesn't happen until at least 5-ish years. In the grand scheme, the exact age doesn't matter, since eith proper care, our tortoises can outlive us.

How much does your tortoise weigh? Weight is more indicative of maturity than age, since RTs in the wild can grow at such different rates. If your tortoise is more than 450g and looks like this, it's female. If it weighs less, it could still sprout a long male tail.
