Russian With Serious Foot Issues

Tried to get some better pictures to show the damage done …..

In this pic look at the right hand edge of the foot ..... you can see the shape is all wrong and see where the 'Foot' has been ground away.



In this pic look at the lack of claw or 'Foot' scales.

In this next pic you can see the foot has a abnormal shape, which is not round at all. You can see the constant 'Rubbing' has caused the foot to be reshaped into a 'Flat' area instead of the rounded normal shape.



Didn't realize this was on;y the left foot till I started to post it, the other foot is just the same and I think you can get a better picture of what happened.

I've been thinking about little Percy a lot - you said you had managed to get her to eat a bit yesterday - has she eaten any more today? And is she showing any signs of being settled? I just can't get my head round how anyone could have just left her like that - there must have been a reason they put her there - and knowing she was in there, how could they possibly leave her - some people just don't deserve to be considered human !

I did not try to feed her yesterday, was allowing her to 'Settle' in a little more. I also want her to be hungry each time I do try to feed. We are trying to only mess with her when we have to to go at it slow. She has calmed down and is very happy with the Coco Coir substrate, it must be a comfort to not have a hard abrasive substrate that her feet touch. We are spraying her feet 2x Day with Chlorhexidine to keep it as clean as possible and promote healing.
This is EXACTLY why we started Joshua Tree Reptile Haven, this animal would have suffered to death. She will now know (soon) what life really is ... No Fear or Pain and experience Happiness with a full belly. I have realized that I CANNOT think of the 'Why' anymore with these torts that have been tortured. I cannot come up with any logical answers or reasons and it just puts me in a bad mind set. I have now accepted that if it was not for the terrible person that we get the tort from, we would not be able to help said tort. I have to focus on the positive fact that now the tort will be helped, if the terrible person didn't have the tort we wouldn't be able to help and make an impact in that torts life. I want to shed light on the terribles but have to just focus on the positives of the situation. Percy will be another success story we use to Teach others about proper tort care. Her life (Hopefully) will teach others what needs to be done to successfully care for a Tortoise, and that positive is so much better to focus on than the negatives in the past.

I am thinking that on top of the physical trauma, there has to have been some sort of necrosis it to have healed so well.

I was going to recommend Stump. Sounds harsh but there is something about embracing your challenges to move past them. That said Percy is also nice in this case!

After the statement about the fear being more than the pain, it would read more clearly if it said, "But now she has..." a forever home and so on. At first when it went to that shot, I thought it was starting to explain about what the fear/conditions were rather than going to Joshua Tree saving her. It needs a couple word segue just to make it easy/clear for the viewer to connect JT with saving critters.

Wanted to give everyone a update on Percy. She still has not eaten again but has settled down and stopped the constant attempt to get out. She is actually starting to like me stroking her shell softly and will streeeeetch her back legs out as straight and far as they'll go. We have housed her on a soft blanket and taken out the Coco Coir, we were afraid of the constant moisture on her feet. She is starting to understand 'We' are not a threat and letting us treat and clean her feet with no real problems. We allow her to dictate the days activities, if she is content with hiding under the blanket we don't push it and just wait until she's more active and then do the treatments. Her face is just so precious when she looks at you blinks her eyes then stretches her head out to check out her surroundings. We are just taking it slow and allowing her to feel comfort instead of what had to be a constant life of pain.

We have come to really respect someone that is Honest enough to be Honest about the fact they do not want to take care of a tortoise. This allows the Tortoise the chance to get great care instead of them not being honest with themselves and the tort suffers while they just keep lying to themselves. I do not think bad at all if someone is upfront and says "I don't want the responsibility" or "I don't have the time."

Totally agree. Specially with tortoises. They get the wrong info, sounds simple, doesn't take up a lot of room, they are so tiny cute, let's get one. Then they find the correct information and holy sh**, their money went down the drain they originally spent for equipment and now they need to not only buy the correct stuff, but give up double, triple or more space to this not so tiny dinosaur.

I am glad to say that this is what happened to Edward too. His owner died and the relatives were honest enough to admit to not being able to take care of him.

She is doing so much better than we expected, strutting her stuff with attitude. She has the personality of a Male and the Kindness of a Girl, a Lover she is, when she wants to be.
