Well we received a call last night about this poor guy, possible car strike. For those of you that don't know .... we of course dropped everything drove the 6 hours got the tort and scheduled immediate vet care (surgery) with Dr. Molnar. I will be sitting in the parking lot before anyone else....waiting of course. If your not 15 minutes early your late, no way we'll be late for this guy to wherever we need to be. I have posted this story here for others to see 'what' will be done and the end result. When your heart is full of LOVE no road is too long, bumpy or dark. This tortoise was hurt by humans and NEEDS humans to step up and help period....we are happy to be that human. As we get info we will post it here to share and please remember as you read this ..... It is the TFO that has created this rescue by sharing your compassion it has put the wind in our sails to sail this ocean of uncharted waters. Fingers crossed for this little one.

Thankfully, it doesn't appear that any vital organs would have been damaged from what I can see. Hopefully it can be fixed via a simple stabilization procedure without actual major surgery being required.

Good luck!

Poor little one. Thank God for people like you. Too bad the person driving didn't try to do the same but where would they go. Would they even know where to go? Would fish and wildlife even try to help? Would they hit your dog and do the same?

Here is what was done......
The wound was cleaned and irrigated (flushed) and just as @zovick predicted no organs were affected. I was worried about the spine but doc said it was just below that and not a worry...for him. There was some torn skin that needed stitches but nothing major. I will get some pictures hopefully today of the repair, it looks like a couple pieces of aluminum foil were stuck to the shell, but it is actually some medical adhesive product. The outlook is good for this little one and we can't be happier, this is what we work so tirelessly for .... a chance at Life. It was a 17 hour trip and 600 miles for this little one to get the help needed, as @Cathie G mentioned, this is just the reality of what had to be done and the distances to achieve that.
If Fish and wildlife would have been contacted it would have been killed. The CTTC doesn't take ANY torts like this and have over 300 in 'Foster Care' so when one like this shows up .... well I don't need to type what they do, you know. This is why we are so passionate about the DT and the desperate need for someone to do something. As a matter of fact no CTTC would even answer the phone or respond. Not the case with us, we dropped everything to make sure anything that was needed was done period. When the tort was seen and picked up by whoever the person was they said to themselves "this tortoise needs help, I need to find a rescue." We just made sure that is what happened ... A Rescue. It makes us feel incredible to 'Do' what any decent person would expect to be done. No Excuses, No Power Trip, No Titles Mattered just help was given to an animal in desperate need.
Thank You for all the support this community is truly changing the lives of Tortoises all over the world.

@EppsDynasty - Were you able to watch what the vet did? I'm wondering if you ever come across another shell injury similar, if you would be able to take care of it yourself?
We did not watch the doctor as Dana was running around SoCal saving other tortoises while Doc took care of her. Doc did say it was a fairly clean break so he was able to place the shell back together, however there were some tears that needed stitches. We can evaluate as each case comes in to consider if we may be able to care for it ourselves, but when it involves surgical techniques, we will leave that to the vet. Especially for the antibiotics to clear any infection along with pain meds for comfort. Things like JoJo and Asha, we can handle, but surgical anything we will always leave to the vet! ☺️🐢💚

Prayers for this little guy. He’s. The same size as my Rock. I’d be devastated if anything happened to Rock. My heart is already hurting for this baby. Please keep us updated
