So this is the light i got with the 40 gallon tank I got.... and this is this the clamp light.... and the 40 gallon tank.... went from wooden house to glass.. I got some terracotta saucers for food and water.... putting lots of hides in.. and am gonna be closing off the top.... but I need some advice from yall on how you would set up the lighting with a glass 40 gallon tank... and just know that im only working with what I have but am working diligently to improve!!
Also I wanna give an update about Lil bowser...
I started weighing him once a week to see if he is gaining or losing weight.. and he has been consistently gaining...
on January 1 he was exactly 50grams and 2.75 in shell length..
. on January 8 he was 51.42 grams
January 16th he was 53.60g
January 24th he was 54.98g
So I am taking that as a good sign.... is it enough or should he be gaining more?
Thanks all for letting me share

I’m absolutely no expert, but I’ve seen from the experienced handlers on here that red lights are unnecessary and even can be dangerous. At night, they don’t need light, just like in nature the sun goes away (although they continue to need whatever ambient heat and humidity your species requires.) And the red lights confuses their vision. They have four cones (I think) and it makes things look like food that aren’t, like substrate.

Fish tanks are a no for tortoises it creates too much heat and doesn't breathe properly if that makes sense, you are better off putting a plastic tent over the wood enclosure till you can get a proper enclosure. I started off with a fish tank too because the seller i got Mojo from was an idiot. Mojo almost died. Any colored bulbs or coil bulbs and mercury bulbs are bad. Your tortoise absolutely needs to be in a closed chamber enclosure especially in the Wyoming climate. You want to get a ceramic heat emitter at minimum for heat with the thermostat controller. And get a led flood light bulb in the 5500K to 6500K range. For daylight simulation. Here's a health tracking sheet you can use to track Bowser's progress 20240626_140113.jpg

The open top will prevent this enclosure from working for you. It will let all your heat up and out into the room. You need a closed chamber of some sort. A large PVC type enclosure would be best, but enclosing this in a plastic tent would be better than nothing.

No red bulbs. You need a ceramic heating element set on a thermostat to maintain the temperature between 82 and 86 day and night.

Red foot tortoises don't need a basking lamp, and that will only dry out the carapace and cause pyramiding if used on a. little baby.

You can put an LED type light or two on a timer for 12 hours a day to create a day/night cycle. Screw-in type LEDs or the strip light types all work.

Last thing: A 40 gallon tank can work for a tiny hatchling for a few months, but it's really too small for them once they start growing. It's time to start looking for something bigger. In your climate, this is going to need to be a large closed chamber.

I do have to agree with above, unfortunately this isn’t the kind of set up or lighting that will work for a baby red

I got it set up finally... and i have a 100w ceramic heater... and led flood light and his uvb light... I put this greenhouse topper that I fabricated from the one I bought... I am using coco coir and fir bark as substrate... terracotta saucers for food and water and have the heater connected to the thermostat.... like I said im trying to my best for my little guy with the things that I have... I know there is alot still to improve on... but I can do wat I can do when I can do it! To make it easier for your little tort and a peace of mind make sure your terracotta saucers are flush with the substrate. It will make it easier for the tort to get in and out an also eliminates possibility of them ending up side down. We understand the struggles and hurdles to get a perfect environment for a tortoise. We're just doing what we can to help eliminate extra cost from the wrong stuff. You're headed in the right direction. Keep up the good work.
