My father in law was gifted a tortoise he doesn’t want it and dropped it off to us. What is this?

That's an extremely dry desert tortoise. I would give that guy a warm soak right away.

Oh my. . . poor little thing!!! It's an extremely dry desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii). Start soaking him daily for about 15 minutes in warm water that comes up to the middle of his sides. After 15 minutes dry him off well and apply cold pressed coconut oil with a cotton ball all over his shell and skin. Allow that to sit on the tortoise for another 15 minutes, then take a soft, absorbent cotton cloth and polish off all the oil. Show us a picture of the 'after', please!

On second thought, I'm thinking he has gray clay dried onto his shell, so after he's soaked for a while take a tooth brush and lightly scrub all that mud off his shell. (coconut oil suggestion still stands)

Cutest little thing! Not sure on the kind of tortoise it is, but definitely needs a soak in warm water.

Thanks for the suggestion. She has been going at that leaf since my posting earlier. I have filled a small bowl with filtered water and will rest her there for 15 minutes.
