Hi! New to the forum, but have been enjoying reading lots of useful information. Introducing Anton, who has been in my husband’s family since September 1964...and we don’t know what kind he is. He was young, but not a newborn, when he was gifted to my brother-in-law, and then he lived in my parent-in-law’s apartment and garden for about 50 years, and now he’s lived with us about 6 years. My husband used to think he was a Greek tortoise, but after everything I’ve read on here, I don’t think so anymore, but not sure what he is. Here are pictures of him from above and below. Would love any input on what kind of tortoise we have. He’s very healthy, but of course the more we know, the more we can adjust his diet appropriately. Thanks!

I'm notoriously bad at I.D.ing the mediterranean tortoises, but I'm going to take a stab at it. Due to the two bars of dark coloration running down each side of the plastron I'm going with T. hermanni. But let's send a shout-out to @HermanniChris for his expert opinion

Yvonne is right. You absolutely have a male Hermann's tortoise and subspecies is Testudo hermanni hercegovinensis.

Awesome! I’m so excited that we know. I’d read an article - I think on here - comparing several of the species, and that was my guess, but it is fantastic to know for sure! Now we can read up on whether we’ve been feeding him right for 50+ years. Lol
