hello,

my 15 year old male has had fluctuating weight since waking up from hibernation. at first i was most concerned about his weight LOSS and took him to the vet (they had no concerns), now i’m worried about his very sudden weight GAIN - he gained 54g in one week …

here is a weekly track of his weight since waking:
  • 03/03 - 840g
  • 09/03 - 845g
  • 17/03 - 849g
  • 23/03 - 846g (had been in the garden for a few days, first of the year, and eating/drinking lots but very active)
  • 30/03 - 830g (stopped eating for a few days)
  • 06/03 - 843g
  • 13/04 - 897g (he has been eating loads this week and basking a lot outdoors, less active more resting)
i feel like he’s rapidly gone back to his pre-hibernation weight. however, i assumed this would be slow to come back on and happen more gradually.

he seems absolutely fine in himself, if not better than before. he’s happy to be spending the days outside (inside for evenings and colder days), he’s eating more, urinating and pooing frequently. he is somewhat less active than before. he will explore the garden for a while but then find a spot to bask in for the remainder of the day. if we was indoors he’s be scrambling around for hours.

should i be concerned with this increase??

This is normal after brumation. They are refilling their gut and re-hydrating after their winter slumber. They lose a lot of "food" weight when they empty their gut before brumation. Once their appetite kicks back in after waking up, rapid weight gain is normal. Looks like "All systems are GO!" for your tortoise this spring.
