Sounds terrible, but this is a good sign.

This year, I intentionally tried breeding my Russian torts. I believe the copulations were successful. I keep my males and females seperate. I've tried keeping them together in the past in a 40ft enclosure l, but the males always were too light; not eating, but fighting or trying to breed, and the females were beat up.

The females have been eating twice a day, and of course foraging on weeds in the enclosure. Now they are starting to combat over nesting spots.

I've never been good at checking torts for eggs, especially my aquatic scratches, but I believe we are close.

I cut the enclosure in half so I don't miss all the eggs like I did last year( missed a bunch of box turtle nests too). We have moles bad here, and if i don't dig up nests asap, they're as good as food.

I believe after this week of rain we should start to get some action.4452.jpgHere's to fertility!

Yeah, when my girlsbare gravid, they start to bulldoze each other and open their mouths, sometimes even mount. They they start pacing. Then they dig test holes, and finally lay. My experienced females will lay a day or two after the first test hole. Younger, inexperienced females will sometimes dig test holes for a week or more because they feel the pressure of the eggs inside them.

Russians drop their eggs quickly too, in comparison to some other species. Check hourly, or put up cameras to catch the nest making.
