Hi! I'm new, my name is Jennifer and my red foot is named Al. I've had him for about a month and I wanted us both to have a new friend. I know to look for one about the same size and keep them apart for about 6 months. Have any of you had any trouble with red foots and aggression. I'd hate for Al to get hurt. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jennifer

That's a good question. Al is about 4-5 inches. The vet said he was a boy and was about 3 months old, but the pictures I've seen online would lead me to believe that he's older and that it's hard to tell sex this soon. She figured his sex by the distance between the shell where his tail comes out. Jennifer

I guesstimate it's 2 to 3 years old (Terry will probably correct me on this). Sexing at this age is a guess also. I say enjoy it for the wonderful creature it is at this point.

I certainly am. We did add a new tortoise today. S/he is great too. We'll just go with gender neutral names at this point. Al/ly and Francisco/a. Thanks! Jennifer

How is the new addition settling in? Did you put the two together or keep the new one in a quarantine situation?

Much has happened lately. I did put them together and then Stella (new tortoise just didn't seem like a Francisca too much attitude) got a RI. Now they are both dewormed and separated until she's all better. She's doing fine on antibiotics and eye drops. I moved Ally, the original tort into a 3'x3' table. She is much more subdued than Stella. Stella is more like a dog and Alli is more like a cat if you know what I mean. I think Stella would come when I called her, and Alli could do with or without me. I love them both though. This experience has been a ton of fun. Do you have an outdoor enclosure? I'm planning ahead for spring and would love to see some ideas. Thanks for the response. jennifer

Hi Jennifer, welcome to the forum. If you put the to together watch Ally for signs of RI. It might be eaisier to treat both at the same time. My experience is once one has it any others that have had contact with it will get it. That's why it is best to keep them quarantined, but thats hindsite here. Good luck with your little ones.
