Another Little Hermanni

Another Testudo hermanni hermanni hatched today after 53 days This is the quickest I've had one hatch. She's adorable and is a pretty big baby even though mom is another one of my "mini" tortoises. Mom is 4.5", she's a little bigger than the mother of the last baby I hatched.

This little baby has an attitude and she hissed and gaped at me right out of her egg.

Tortugo, mom is exactly 5 years old. She's small, but the mother of the last baby I posed is only 4 years old and just barely 4 inches in length. These 2 moms are much smaller than the other adult hermanni hermanni have.

Wonderful baby. Do you attribute anything to such small moms?

No not really, in the wild these tortoises would not produce this young. Here in captivity and because they are captive bred, things have been a bit faster for them. I am still a bit shocked at the fact that both small females produced. Interestingly enough, both females laid 2 eggs and only 1 from each clutch was fertile. Now this may have had something to do with the mothers themselves or could be blamed on the father and the fact that he is only 2.5 years old.

All of my other females are for the most part older animals and are originally from Italy and France.
