Basking area

Hello all, in my closed chamber the sockets for the bulbs and che's are 24". I just got a incandescent basking light like Tom said to do. On the box it has the different temps at various heights. At 24" it's only rated about 82*. I think I need something that the baby can crawl up on to get somewhat closer without the possibility of falling off upside down. Any suggestions for such an enclosure add in?

I hang my fixtures from the ceiling and adjust the temps by raising or lowering them. You could also add some wattage but then you have to be careful about overheating the whole enclosure.

You might need to use a dome type fixture for your basking light instead of a mounted one. The fixed fixture will probably be fine for you CHE in a closed chamber though since all the heat stays inside.

Yeah, I was wondering if they get these rates with a closed chamber. It quite possibly work just find in a closed chamber where all the heat is captured

You could get a couple pieces of thick slate or other flat rock (flagstone?) in different sizes and stack them (just 2 or 3 high). The size difference would create natural stairs, and the rock does a great job trapping and storing the heat. This has the added benefit that your tort gets warmed from below. Dark rock absorbs more heat than light colored rock.

I also boost the temperature in the basking area by adding a ceramic (non-light) bulb in the winter. They last forever, and fit into a standard dome lamp. I learned the hard way not to TOUCH the bulb to see if it's working... anyway, with this my basking area is at 95-100 even in the winter. In the summer the ceramic bulb isn't necessary.

what would be a max height to make a basking platform? Of course with sides so the baby doesn't fall off.
