Anything you buy from a nursery will be full of pesticides. Buy something from a grocery store like organic wheatgrass or those little lettuce head pots.

Or just grow some seed mix yourself. You can grow several trays and rotate them in and out as they get eaten.

The spider plant will work fine. You might try asking friends, family, neighbors or on Craig's list/Freecycle for a starter which might already have no chemicals used on it.

My grandparents have had their spiderant for over 20 years. Their friend crimped a piece of their plant and gave it to them. They dont know if the person they got it from bought it fertilized or not. Since its 20 years old+ wpuld the fertilizer have been... gone?

Yes. Totally safe. I'm told that the systemic pesticides will last a year at most.
