I lost my 90 lb friend last night and I am devastated. He was with me for 15 years. We are planning on burying him under/in a hollowed-out giant tree stump that he had dug out over the last few summers. The tree was dying and I had it cut down in November, but had them leave the stump just for him. The hole is 2-3 feet deep and we have plenty of dirt to fill it in, plus we have very large stones to put in front of the opening. Does that sound like it will be sufficient? I am also going to try to find an appropriate plant to plant there in the spring.

First, welcome to TFO! I am so very sorry you joined us for such a devastating reason! We all understand how heartbreaking this loss is.

If you feel up to it, maybe you could tell us about your friend..was he a sulcata? Did he get himself in trouble often? Most of them do somewhere along the line. We'd love to hear about your buddy.

Regarding the burial...I think that only 2-3 feet deep may cause a problem if any animals are able to get inside his enclosure. Then again, the cold weather helps you with this, and putting the large stones in place will certainly help. I think other animals are your only concern.

I buried a 15 lb dog about that depth, but it was in hot weather. Still, I was horrified to see many flies gathered on the surface of the ground. But keep in mind that anything you put in front of it does not have to be permanent. Even a fence of some kind would work, and in a few months it could be removed.

I am so sorry for your loss. I buried a 120 pound Sulcata in my back yard...I dug as deep as I could...making it about 3.5 feet deep...That was in 2015 and by 2001 the top of his carapace was visible, it rains a lot here...

So very sorry. I would go deeper.
As KarenSoCal mentioned, we would love to hear about him. Post pictures too if you'd like. We understand the loss.
