Hello this are pics of my tortoise Sally.
An acquaintance pawned her onto us six months ago and lately we find her shell has become pretty soft. We feed her cucumbers, lettuce and occasionally she eats tomatoes.

Any guesses how old she might be and if she is a land tortoise?
And please could you recommend a brand for calcium or vitamin supplements for her.

Many thanks in advance.

You are in India? Yes this is a land species.

The soft shell is caused by lack of UVB light. This comes direct from the sun. UVB from the sun doesn’t pass through window glass.

A tortoise kept entirely indoors must also have a UVB lamp.

Cucumber and lettuce does not provide an adequate diet. There are few nutrients, especially calcium, in either. Your tort needs a variety of weedy and leafy greens.

Looks like a greek tortoise. There are several subspecies from different parts of the world. Care for greeks, Russians and hermanni is essentially the same. Read these:
https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/beginner-mistakes.45180/
https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/russian-tortoise-care-sheet.80698/

This tortoise needs:
  1. Hydration in the form of daily warm soaks.
  2. Immediate improvement in the diet.
  3. Calcium supplementation 3-4 times a week.
  4. A good UV source ASAP. You can use the sun if the weather is warm enough outside, but be sure the tortoise always has access to shade and can't get too hot or too cold in its outdoor enclosure.

Hi Cheryl, and welcome to the Forum!

Your little Greek tortoise is in pretty bad shape. It's on the road to dying if you don't change the way you care for it quickly. Please read our Greek care sheet:

https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/greek-tortoise-testudo-graeca-care-sheet-overview.87146/

. . . and make any changes, adjustments to the way you are caring for the tortoise. His eyes are swollen, his shell is soft - these are very serious. The care sheet will also give you a better idea of what to feed the little guy.
