There are many topics, photos etc that I support or would like to support but don't always feel the need to comment on, is there any chance we could have a 'like' button? All thoughts and comments welcome

I feel the same exact way! Like you don't want to say "Oh cute" to every tortoise picture.

At the top of every thread, there is a "Thread Rating" where you can give up to 5 stars. No one seems to use it though

The problem with a "like" button for each post is it becomes a popularity thing rather then a way to express how good you thought a comment or post was. It ends up serving no valid purpose and feelings get hurt.

We used to have all that, but a bunch of people complained LOUDLY, and it was all taken away. Then they quit this forum, started their own, and have all the bells and whistles there that they objected to here.

Interesting....

So, how would use the star rating? 1 means don't like it- 5 means you love it?

wow, I didn't even realize that was for us to rate the thread! I thought it was some automatic thing that filled along with the amount of reads or posts. cool to know! Thanks!

I liked the old "Reputation Points" system. The people that Dennis spoke of convinced Josh and the mods to abolishing the whole points system. The whole "hurt feelings" thing sure reeked of jealousy to me. Some of them didn't like some of the people who had more points than them, and it bothered their dark little hearts when someone they didn't like got a compliment.

So now, we got nothin'.

Can likes per post and likes per poster be separated?

i.e.
Allow a post to be "likes" and show the number of likes, or ta list of who liked the post, under/next to a post.

BUT don't allow the total number of likes that a poster has accumulated be displayed next to a poster's ID or on their profile.

That way you can see which posts are popular within a thread, but there is no opportunity for competitive like-collecting (or sulking!) and no ranking system.

Since I don't participate in any social media besides this Forum, I don't really understand the whole "like" thing. Can't you just read a thread, say to yourself, in your head, "Wow, that's a good thread." Then move on to the next one? Why does a "like" for the thread have to be expressed? I think the Original Poster can assume that his thread is liked if there are no dissenting comments made on the thread.

I belong to a crested gecko forum, and instead of likes, there is an option to "thank" a member for their response. Near their post count it will say "user has been thanked x times in x posts"

What's the problem with simply saying to a person in the thread they make the post in, something about it being a good post or you liking the comment or information they gave? For many folks having any kind of a count makes it feel like a competition.

Thank you for the feedback everyone. I like the idea of a Like system. The problem we had with the reputation system was the comments that were being left and the drama that surrounded them. We still have post counts and I don't feel like that's a 'competition' in any way.

I think I may be a member of the site you are reffering to.

There is an aquatic forum I frequent and they run the rep points system. Id say for them it works, as there are a few members who post nonsense or merely say hello to every new member, like everyone, they drag up threads if they miss them. So whilst their post count is 5000+ their rep stars are minimal allowing newbies to see that they don't give out a lot of good info when considering the amount of posts they have.

That being said there are virtually no members here that I have seen which are like the ones I just described. So I can see why you dont really need the rep system.

I do like the like idea though :)
