I recently acquired this tortoise from a friend, and was told it was a hermanns. if so, is this an eastern or western? or is this something entirely different?? I think its a western but to be honest its hard to tell with the damage on its shell. I only have good understanding of redfoots and cherryheads, so this is new grounds for me. Any help is appreciated.

That is neither an Eastern nor a Western Hermann's Tortoise. It looks more like a Greek Tortoise as DoubleD said above.

Thanks, I could tell something was wrong just looking at it, but I don't have enough experience to be sure. Really appreciate the help :)
