Use coco coir for bedding for young ones, get it at pet stores in a brick for like $5. You have to choose between an open or closed enclosure. The latest thinking is a closed enclosure keeps the humidty higher which leads to smoother shells and less pyramiding. Open enclosures can be used too, but you need to spray and mist more often to keep higher humidities for the first several years. Hides can be anything. I have used a cardboard box for a while, but plastic lasts longer. I found a nice round plasic busket that looks like a tall salad bowl and cut out two doors and these guys like it. Get creative, not expensive.

Thank you. Was thinking of putting plexiglass lids with hinges in top of enclosure with numerous vent holes. Thay should hold the humidity well..

Vent holes are a myth of the past. There is plenty of air for your tort to breathe without vent holes. Nobodies closed chamber is perfectly closed, and even if it was, there is still plenty of good air that gets replaced when you open up the enclosure. You would have to leave your enclosure closed for weeks to have any mal effects! So go ahead and keep that humidity trapped in there as much as possible!

Definitely search "closed chambers" or search for "Tom" and look at his threads for raising smooth and healthy leopards - they're fantastic! The sulcata care sheets apply to leopards. Basically hot and humid environments simulates a wild hatchling's environment. The hot and dry routine is old-school now, technically. Hot and humid raises them more naturally i guess.

For any Mods reading this post - could we not get Tom's leo/sulcata care sheets put as stickies? A lot of people refer Newbie's to them with Leos and Sulcatas.

Yep, everything that everyone else has said, I ditto. Read Tom's suggestions and follow them to a "T" for Tom. Works wonders in my opinion. Hot and humid = healthy and happy! I can't wait to see pics of your new baby which you can't wait to get. Yay! : )

I have a leopard hatchling and learned the hard way to just start off with a closed chamber. I had an open tub with a heatlamp, basically Echo didn't have any heat unless he was under the lamp and although I sprayed the bejeebees out of his cage im sure there was no humidity either. But trust me don't waste money on a "cheap" enclosure because you'll eventually have to pay $ to make a closed if you want a healthy tortoise. Now with my closed chamber the temps stay 90 degrees in there and 80% Humidity, and i barely have to do anything to keep those maintained. I still spray a few times a day the cage, and i spray echo maybe 4-5 times a day, as well as daily soaks. I noticed that his growth really took off after getting put in the closed chamber, so its just better to make one :) Good luck!

Toms threads are at the bottom of my post. Copy them and you should have a nice healthy, smooth leopard.
