She's pretty much straightened out now. She has a bit of yolk sack left, so won't be set-up for a day or so. She is 4.5cm long and 4.5cm wide and 30g. :D

A 21 year wait, more patience than I have! Tell us more about Chaco's. Why are they so hard to hatch in capitivity?

AHA, NOW I understand why we are calling it a "she." Don't split scutes occur most often on females?

The thing about Chaco eggs is that they diapause (stop developing). They need a cooling period to break the diapause. This one got a 2 1/2 month cooling period at around 60F. I've had problems with the next 3 eggs not wanting to break diapause after the first cooling period. I than cooled them off for an additional month. They have only just gotten back in the incubator about a week and a half ago. Hopefully this second cooling period will do the trick. :D

Sometimes yes and sometimes no Kristina. Kind of more hoping on my part. :p

By chance is either parent one of the two that you got from me as youngsters back in the early 90's?

That would be cool!

That is just tortoise perfection personified. I love the little saw tooth action around the edge of the carapace. If you end up with a bunch of these and want someone to raise some for you, I GOT DIBS!!! Nice work Danny. I'm really looking forward to watching these grow. What are you planning to do for their set up? Humidity?

Why does everyone think I'm going to sneak down to Danny's house to steal his Chaco baby? He earned her arrival and existence, after all! :p

I love my own Chaco! I wish she was not so "rare", and am still wondering why so few Chacos survive in captivity and fail to reproduce successfully. Vinke and Vetter didn't seem to have an answer for that. It kind of makes Taco's survival just that much more miraculous, considering how poorly we kept her for her first three and a half years...
