It's cypress mulch for the moment but I have coconut coir in the mail that I'll use in his hide box and I'm going to switch to sphagnum moss for the rest of the enclosure.

I use the coconut husk through my babies indoor enclosure, easy for him to muscle through plus soft on those tiny feet, At 1st I didnt care for it, but now I love it :) Outside house I used top soil.. he loves the soil more so much, he digs his self a nice hole and sits in it :D

And I enjoyed the pics! I hope to see more!

I have used Eco Earth also and like it a lot. Your little guy is very cute and has nice colors in the face. I can tell you are so thrilled.

He's beautiful. Don't slow down on the pics, we love them. I'm surprised he's eating for you so soon. That's a good sign. Often they take a day or two to settle in and get comfortable. I can't believe how smooth he is! Perfect! I hope you are following Richard's advice to a "T". Whatever he's doing with them obviously works!

Congratulations. I'm very happy for you, and jealous. And I don't mean just a little.

He is SO gorgeous!! I love the pics of him in the blue dish- blue is his color ;)
Congrats Kat, he's adorable!! You should take a picture of him in your hand or next to a quarter or something so we can have a size reference ;)

PS. Next time you should put the pics in the general Tortoise Picture section so that more people can enjoy them ;) I only checked the Leopard section because I knew you were getting Cody today. Usually I stick to Russian care or general. But we need to show off Nelson's handsome new cousin! ;)

I had to take the log out of his enclosure. He decided to climb up it and hang out then on the way down he lost his gripping and tumbled down onto his back where I nearly had a heart attack. Bye-bye log house!

He's going to be a naughty boy lol But he is full of personality. He even eats when I hold it out in front of him with my hand. He's not nervous one bit. I guess the plane ride gave him a good appetite :p

Katie, he's a little bigger than I expected but still tiny. I'll get some comparison pictures later.

I took this from Mr. Fife's website

"First I concluded that Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss works very well as a moisture retaining sub-straight. It has a property that discourages the growth of molds and fungi. It also doesn’t seem to be toxic if ingested and doesn’t impact the gut if eaten. It is also readily available and relatively inexpensive.

I provide a plastic shoebox with an opening cut in the side, which serves and an entrance. I put an inch or two of slightly moist Canadian Peat Moss inside the shoebox for the tortoises to hide in. The moist peat moss increases the humidity inside the box.

The substrate outside the hide box can be any commonly used dry substrate. I use dry alfalfa hay with all the thick stems and sticks removed. It is important to separate the dry substrate from the moist substrate in order to prevent the growth of mold or fungi on the dry substrate.

It is also important to provide, water, heat, UVB lighting, and a well balanced diet. The peat moss should be checked routinely for moisture level and regularly replaced with fresh peat moss.

After several years of using this system (moisture chamber) I have been able to consistently produce exceptionally nice captive hatched tortoises. Under these conditions pyramiding can me eliminated and my tortoises are active and healthy."

It sounds like the only moist area is the area in the hide and the rest of the enclosure is a dry substrate?

Cody is adorable!!! I LOVE the pic of him in the blue dish, with his mouth open all big, as if he's saying, "Thank God I'm off that plane and getting some food! I'm staaaaaarving!!" I look forward to seeing more pics! :)

Is that the was he was shipped in that first picture?
