We've got a big problem in some areas of the UK with river pollution, which is being investigated. It's believed to be caused by run off from chicken farms that have been built near them or maybe from the use of chicken fertiliser on farms. It's destroying the eco system in the river and killing fish. ☹️
"Farm runoff" is a big thing over here near the bay. From what I can see with my own eyes is that all along the major waterways mitigation(neutralization tanks and/or plantings to absorb) steps have been reasonably successful. They only really struggle when there is 100 year storms but by and large, they seem to prevent the runoff in those areas. The issue from what I have seen are those chicken farms with 2-6 long buildings way the heck out in the boonies but along a creek that feeds into the larger rivers and the bay itself. Those guys seem to think a berm will do and it doesn't. It is worlds better than it was in the 80's 10 years after they "agent oranged" the waterways to clear the seaweed. That was the worst thing I ever watched them do. We used to watch the crop duster planes spraying the rivers. Killed the hiding places for all species of young and we all know what happened then......crashes in Crab, Oyster and fish populations followed by Oyster disease which crushed the industry......all by "people who thought they knew more than other people"

There's a lot of "them" out there. They seem to enjoy spending other peoples risk and money on their whims though......

okay, my rant is over.

I read that box turtles can be fertile for several years after being with a male. I've always wondered if tortoises are the same way. Or maybe what I read is false. It would be interesting to actually know the answer to that.
I am sure it is true. Some sea turtles can be fertile for around 5 years.

100 baby sulcs in a couple months will reveal that MS Sully fooled Ray and had buried a stash of eggs somewhere unseen! LOL

I'm picking Kerry up at 10pm this evening. I thought it would be real nice while she was gone for 2 weeks. I figured I'd be able to do stuff i wanted to get done. It just dawned on me....i do that when she's home anyway! It will be good to hold her again.

It STINKS outside! I ran up to get milk and bread and in the Spring, farmers use chicken waste from all the chicken farms to fertilize their crops. I don't know how that works out for the prions in the soils but when we all get mad cow, we'll know! We have a LOT of farmland....holy cow...i sure hope it rains today.

I've been freshening up my motorcycles. Some haven't been riden in 7 years so they need attention before riding. I finished one but it's a 3 cylinder two stroke that needs to run a while to "clear out" but there hasn't been any winds here. I need brisk winds to carry the huge cloud of smoke that will accompany starting it up to set the mixture screws. I briefly fired it up the other day with both doors on the garage open...even then it took a half hour for the smoke to clear. Lol

Enjoy the day guys....today "Saturday" actually begins with the letter S!
We need to see video when you finally ride your motorcycle. Preferably with the front wheel off the ground!👍👍👍👍🏍🏍

There is a area here where the pesticides and fertilizer were running of into the St. James river. So they built berms around a very large area. So the polluted water from the orange and grapefruit groves empties. Empties into the man made reservoirs. The water is then filtered through the grasses in the reservoirs before being emptied into the St. James river. It has worked very well helping to stop pollution entering the river.

Good afternoon/evening all.
Unlike the US, we are having pretty dry weather at the moment, but it is very cold thanks to winds from the north. I'm still breaking ice on the bird baths in the morning.
I've just read that the south of the UK may have temps up to 66f next week - a rise of more than 20 degrees, so Natrah may benefit from that.

Lola hasn't left his hide at all today, but he did eat when provided with room service. He's had a little walk outside most days this week but for some reason he didn't want to move today. I'll give him a good long soak in the morning to see if that livens him up.

I hope everyone is having a good Sunday.
🙏

Same to you Cathie. The Irish sure know how to celebrate their patron saint. The Welsh government are talking of following their lead and making St David's Day a holiday, seems a bit late really. 😄

Good morning all.
It's beautiful here and the temps are set to rise for a couple of days at least. I have the sniffles and a cough at the moment so been feeling the cold, so it will be nice to feel warmer.

Lola is still behaving strangely. The day after he stayed in his hide he had a normal day of eating and wandering about, but yesterday he stayed in his hide all day again and didn't eat anything. I gave him a nice long soak on Monday, but I'll give him another today and give him some cucumber. He is overdue a poop so maybe that's his problem.

I've been leaving my camera traps out in the garden this week and just looked at the footage. I'm really pleased to see a hedgehog is back again. I don't know if it's one of the hogs that regularly visited last year, before hibernation, but happy to see, they are still in the area. I'll have to get my hedgehog feeder out again.

I hope everyone is well and having a good week so far. TTFN

Dear Lyn,

Jacky has been sleeping for the last week so the cold nights could be affecting Lola. I hope she's okay and I'm pleased you saw a hedgehog.

Dear Lyn,

The vet recommended 28 degrees Celsius during the daytime and 20 degrees Celsius during the night when Jacky and Daisy were ill.

Natrah
Thanks Natrah. I don't think he's ill as such.
Lola's hide is a constant 27/30C because he is an African tort so needs higher temps than Mediterranean species, and warmer in the days. I think he is constipated. He is out and eaten today. He's had a nice long soak but hopefully with the help of some cucumber he'll feel better soon.
