Depression?

Is there a way you can tell a turtle is depressed? Can they get stressed if you handle them to much? I know when they hiss it's cause they are scared, but could it also be a sign of stress? All answers help!

An animal that is depressed, shows little or no response to external stimuli... Commonly referred to as "giving up the will to live...
YES, you can stress any animal by over handling it... God made tortoises to live as a tortoise 24/7... Any less time being a tortoise stresses the animal.
YES, a tortiose "hissing" is a sign of stress... Tortoises "hiss" as a result of pulling in their head and neck and legs into the shell quickly... Anything causing this reaction should be minimize...
