I was wondering if any of your redfoots LOVE to dig? Nova is a dedicated digger. She once dug under her water bowl and had her little den !!! I love how her face is always filled with dirt! Shes such a little trouble maker! Is it normal for redfoots to be such big diggers? :tort:

We have sandy soil and when my redfoots are in there outside enclosure in the summer they dig under a six foot log that I have in there, I would like to think that they do it to hide and possibly get to were it is cooler, another observation that I have made is that when I bring them inside for the night they seem to be in the same spot under the log .

Mine is a big digger! Sometimes I think he is digging for bugs or worms, but he isn't going to find them when he is inside. Once I came home from work and found he had turned over his plants and dug out the plants and all the dirt. His enclosure was a mess. Dirt and mud were stuck on the enclosure cover due to all the condensation. The water dish was a mud bath. He was just half way out of his hide all covered in mud and dirt with a look on his diry little face like he was saying, "Yeah I did that, what are you going to do about it?!?" He also will dig under his water dish and hide. When I work turning over the substrate to evenly distribute moisture he will even get in there to help me dig.

The only time mine has dug is when I had a plant in the corner and they knocked it over and walked all over it. Other than that one time they never dig.

Marty, ours never dug. Does she have places to hide, ours did hide in the bushes alot, most during the heat of the day.

Pio, and Solo have a very moist, humid hide and they both dig their way into it when they go to bed for the night. Pio will dig for worms if she knows there are any in a certain spot. Sometimes when she is outside she will dig under the hosta to make a muddy spot to sit in, instead of sitting in the stream or the pond. They have their reasons for digging, I guess.

Mine don't really seem to dig, except to make little hollows in their favored resting spots. As others have mentioned mine also have lots of hiding places, both purpose built hides and plants to hide under. I could see them digging if denied a good hide or micro-climate.

Might also be possible she's craving a good bug or worm to eat. :)

And it might just be that she likes to dig and mine don't.

Mine likes to dig, under one of his hides in his outdoor pen, I would not say he is a champion digger though, more like a past time for him.

Marty, I do recall they would look for small snails in the grasses, but not really dig.
