Some friends of our have a little poodle that they have had for somewhere around 13 years that has become REALLY sick 3 days ago. They pretty much understand that they cannot save it, but where do they take it to put it down? The vet? Does that cost money? If it does die on them, what do they do with a dead dog? They pretty much expect for it to die today :( Please help :(

You take it to the vet. They will put it down. If it passes before you get it to the vet. They can take it to the vet and they will take care of the rest...I think it cost anywhere from $50- $150

I am so sorry for your friend and their loss...well, if they know it is time and there is no question...then a trip to the vet may be the kindest final ride.

Yes, the vet is where you would take the dog. Yes, they usually charge a 40.00 dollar or so fee for the procedure to put the dog down. Yes, the vet can either take the remains and have them chemically disposed of--however, that is usually an additional fee of somewhere around 40-60.00 dollars--at least here in this area. Or, if your friend owns their property they can simply bring the remains home and do a burial in their yard...and place a marker for a headstone.

RE: Die'ing Dog :(

I would hope a 13 year old dog was seen by a Vet at least a few times over the years..
Depending where they live, the cost will vary.. some places allow you to bury a pet, some dont..
Some SPCA's pr shelters will assist in this and might be cheaper then a vet, but thier rules will vary as well. Some will need to see a Vet note stating its best for the dog, I doubt your friend will be able to stay with the dog. It will be just drop off.. at the Vet, you can choose to stay with or not.
Depending on what is wrong with the dog,, treatment may also be an option. If it was fed lots of leftovers, then he maybe be sick from that.
Regardless, the dog should be helped.

RE: Die'ing Dog :(

I agree with Laura. 3 days of being sick is not necessarily a death sentence. Unless the little guy has been sick for a lot longer and got much worse the last 3 days. There is so much that can be done these days, and yes most diagnostics will cost, but that is what having a pet is all about.
Please encourage them to go to a vet, explain their financial situation what ever it may be. most vets will work something out, especially if the dog has something treatable. Please post what happens, we will all be wondering.
Take care Nay

RE: Die'ing Dog :(

Any vet office will handle disposal of a dead pet. some charge lower rates and some higher, my vet charges 40 for a disposal, unless you are a long time customer, then they handle it no charge, which makes it much easier to handle that part, without having to worry about paying for it.

They just got some more medicine for her so hopefully she gets better. All I know is that the last 3 days the dog has been very sick.

A lot of dogs get into the garbage or Holidays feasts this time of year.. It can cause severe gastro upset or Pancreatitis.. it can be fatal.. Especially if not treated or for the young or old.
I hope the dog does ok..
do you know what the symptoms are?

Let's hope she just keeps on getting better. The holidays are such a rotten time of year to lose something you love. Not that the rest of the year is much better. :(

If it is a poodle they should be able to dig a hole big enough to bury it.

On a side note....I have a dog that hates the vet. Twice I thought he was going to die, but gave him the same herbs I take and that some of my friends give their kids instead of going to the doctor. Both times my dog pulled through. I am a believer that with good nutrition our bodies can heal.
