Why are they common? I see them in wild animals and animals kept in 'wild; conditions. It can't be mainly issues with husbandry, as most of the literature states, since I have seen it in so many wild animals. Any ideas?

It's due to some sort of infection. . . . not necessarily in the ear area. Easterns are not the only ones subject to ear abscesses. I've seen it quite a bit in RES too, and other sub species of box turtle.

Seems like all the 3-toes i see in AR look real healthy. Occasionally a bit of shell damage but they all look fine otherwise if i check them out.
