Walter is a Dalmatian Hermann's. I looked it up and found one that has his exact markings! I've never really looked up Dalmatian hermann's before. Is there anything different about them care wise?

Dalmatian care is identical to Eastern care in every way. The only slight difference is that generally speaking, Dalmatians tend to be less active at cooler temperatures than Easterns. But indoors that would not matter.

Guess you could call her "Waltera" (knew a girl in Arkansas whose mother had that name), but her tail/cloacal area looks exactly like Jennifer, Ophelia and Apollonia's...nothing like Ptolemy's (his looks just like that drawing I put up).

She's very pretty, so go ahead and paint her nails pink, doubt she'll mind!

How's her bill?

Really? I think Walter would be constantly trying to eat her feet then... The beak is being ground down this Tuesday, hopefully. I had to make an appointment for a check up because they wanted me to leave him there all day just for beak grinding. My vet doesn't have a tortoise set up so Walter would be very cold and sad if I left her.

My daughter, an expert on all things fashionable, suggests turquoise or emerald nail polish...or black, if you think Waltera might be Goth... :p

But she'll be able to eat easier...and a check-up, once a year, at least, is never a bad idea.

Off to an EXCELLENT start!

Black might be the only color she'd leave be... Despite her troubles eating she tries to bite at everything, even my jeans hem... At this moment she's actually trying to eat a book... She'll be happy when she can eat like a normal tortoise...

A good sign, actually...as soon as her beak is trimmed, she'll be chowing down BIG TIME!

Plan on a good celebratory dinner...maybe a large cactus pad?

Sadly no cactus pads here in Canada, or at least not where I live... I'll have to brave the snow and find some epic weeds besides chick weed and globe artichoke. I can always re visit the grocery store, she seems to like radicchio.

Walter would also like to add that he really likes permission and banana, secretly he's a yellow ret foot.

Haha in Canada tortoises are ridiculous. I was lucky to pay under 400, any I saw in stores were upwards of 850.

dang thats crazy!

When I first started looking the only tortoise near by that I could find was a sad terribly mistreated box turtle in Pet Land for 950. It wasn't even moving when I picked it up.

Any "ethnic" groceries nearby? Hispanic and Greek grocers often carry cactus pads in the produce section.

Nope. Only Save On and Quality Foods, the one organic market I went to (the only organic market) just looked at me like I was crazy and told me to go to Quality Foods. I truly live in the middle of no where.

Well, ask the Organic Market to order you some! And several sources sell it over the internet, it's really a good source of calcium and fibre, etc. for tortoises (my 4 eat it 2 to 3X a week), so you might also look into getting some from a green house or garden center, and growing cactus in your home (super easy to do!).

If you STILL have trouble finding any, just PM me your snail-mail addy and I'll send you some pads to start off growing...around here, prickly pads are literally everywhere!

I did ask, they were very un accommodating, so were the big box stores, and the pet and garden store where I work. I'll look harder on the Internet, or get the pet store across the sea to order me some.

Sorry you're having so much hassle! :(

My offer stands, but it'll be a month or so.

When you find some that will live in your area, save a few pads to plant in pots...when spring comes, plant them outside and you'll be amazed at how fast they'll spread...FREE TORTOISE FOOD!
