I was just watching animal planet and there was a poor turtle that had calcified eggs stuck in her and coudln't pass them. The vet said that turtles layed eggs twice a year regardless of whether they were fertalized.

Should russians be doing this? Or is this just specific to turtles?

Most of the time, if a turtle or tortoise hasn't been with a male ever in its life, it won't start to lay eggs. Of course, there are some exceptions to this rule, but usually, a female Russian won't lay eggs unless she's been with a male.
