One of my girls (a Hermann's tortoise) nested last night.

I've marked the nest, but I am wondering if I should let them try to incubate in the ground.

Any thoughts? I live near Philadelphia, PA.

The reason I pick up my tortoise eggs is because we have red ants here. The ants actually drill into the eggs and eat the developing babies.

If you think the ground where your nest is will be heated up into the 80's and if there are no red ants, then go for it. But if the ground won't get warm enough, the eggs won't develop and hatch.
